Launch Party for Jon Raymond’s FREEBIRD
February 10 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Join us in celebrating the paperback release of Freebird by Portland’s own Jon Raymond, screenwriter of the acclaimed films Meek’s Cutoff and Night Moves. Out from Tin House this winter, Freebird has been called “a new classic for the collapsing political landscape of America” (Kim Gordon, author of Girl in a Band) and is a searching, darkly funny novel about one family’s moral crisis. Raymond will be joined by two of Portland’s finest literary minds: Patrick DeWitt, author most recently of Undermajordomo Minor, and Vanessa Veselka, author of Zazen. There will be readings, music, and merriment—come one, come all!
Jon Raymond is the author of the novels Freebird, Rain Dragon, and The Half-Life, and the short story collection Livability, winner of the Oregon Book Award. He is also the screenwriter of the film Meek’s Cutoff and cowriter of the HBO miniseries Mildred Pierce, winner of five Emmy Awards. Raymond’s writing has appeared in Tin House, The Village Voice, Bookforum, Artforum, Playboy, Zoetrope, and other publications. He lives in Portland, Oregon.
Patrick deWitt is the author of the critically acclaimed Undermajordomo Minor and Ablutions: Notes for a Novel, as well as The Sisters Brothers, which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize. Born in British Columbia, he has also lived in California and Washington State, and now resides in Portland, Oregon.
Vanessa Veselka is the author of the novel, Zazen, which won the PEN/Bingham prize for fiction. Her short stories appear in Tin House, YETI, and Zyzzyva. Her nonfiction is found in GQ, The Atlantic, Smithsonian, the Atavist, and is included in Best American Essays.
