Nick Thompson – Port Angeles Photographer

April 14, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Nick Thompson is a photographer and filmmaker in Port Angeles, born and raised in Seattle. We’ll welcome him to the shop on Saturday, April 14 to present his self-published book of photos* taken in and around Port Angeles, mostly of people he’s met on the street, all on 35mm film, black and white and color. The book is saddle-stitch, 40 pages, featuring over 75 photos in a minimalist presentation, with a small, simple, hand-drawn map showing the location of Port Angeles at the beginning, and a short artist bio at the end – otherwise no other text.

The book is not meant so much to convey the unique geography or a documentary look of the real Port Angeles but rather to be a moody impression drifting through different parts of the town and region and showing the enigmatic faces one could encounter. It’s a human, individual POV but not focused on the specific traits or judgments of the author.

Olivia Louise is a writer, neighborhood board member and librarian for the houseless with Street Books. She focuses on urban ecology, de & anti-gentrification and humanizing space. With this in mind, she’s excited to introduce and interview her longtime friend Nick Thompson on his place-based photography book Port Angeles: A Year on Film.

*Partial funding for the printing of Nick’s book comes from the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture.
