Omar El Akkad, Dana Levin, and Nancy Slavin
OMAR EL AKKAD, the author of the novel American War (Knopf, 2017), was born in Cairo, Egypt and grew up in the Middle East before moving to Canada. In a ten-year career as a reporter, he covered stories across the planet — from the war in Afghanistan to the military trials in Guantanamo Bay, the Arab Spring revolutions in the Middle East, and the protests in Ferguson, Missouri. He currently lives in Portland.
DANA LEVIN’s new book of poetry is Banana Palace (Copper Canyon Press, 2016). Her first book, In the Surgical Theatre, was chosen by Louise Glück for the 1999 American Poetry Review/Honickman First Book Prize and went on to receive numerous honors, including the 2003 PEN/Osterweil Award. She currently serves as Distinguished Writer in Residence at Maryville University in St. Louis.
NANCY SLAVIN is the author of Oregon Pacific, a collection of poetry, and a novel, Moorings. More of her work can be found in The Manifest Station, hip mama, Rain Magazine, Barrelhouse, and Literary Mama. Nancy lived on the north Oregon coast for over twenty years and recently relocated with her partner and child to the Portland area. She is also a violence-prevention educator.
